Sachsenhausen

I learned about WWII in history classes in school. I’ve watched documentaries and movies about it. Mostly we talked about the war from America’s position and never went in-depth into the horrific events of the Holocaust. I knew about the numbers, but being from the United States, I realize that it was hard to truly empathize with an event that seemed so distant. In all honesty, I didn’t know how to comprehend something so disgusting. How could one person be so cruel, let alone a whole group of people? So many were involved, and so many lives and souls were lost.

It broke my heart walking around Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Physically being where so many suffered and were tortured was overwhelming. I’m not sure I have the words to describe the way I felt. I walked through the camp alone, but it also rained that day, and to me, it felt like God was there, crying over everything that had happened in that place.
